DAPHNE, Ala.—The next program of the Baldwin County Historical Society is set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Daphne Senior Center, 2605 Highway 98. The event will focus on the Mobile Bay Campaign of 1864-65.
The Mobile Bay Campaign during the Civil War will be reviewed in a presentation covering the following issues and activities:
* The importance of Mobile and the Mobile/Tensaw River access to the Confederate War effort.
* Stresses to the Confederacy as it lost ports, industrial centers and inland territory during the war.
* The blockade of the port of Mobile.
* The Union fleet invasion of lower Mobile Bay (August 1864).
* The Union land invasion of lower Baldwin County (September 1864 – Spring 1865).
* Spanish Fort siege.
* Blakely siege.
* Final investment of Mobile and the surrender in North Mobile County.
The presenter will be Stephen Thomas, a self-employed data analyst and programmer for industry and government; he is heavily involved in a variety of historical projects. He has been a presenting guest historian for several National Park Service and Alabama Historical Commission properties as well as other parks throughout the U.S.
Light refreshments will be provided. Admission is free and the public is welcome.
The Baldwin County Historical Society was founded in 1923 to bring citizens of Baldwin County together to ensure the preservation of the rich heritage of this area.
