FOLEY - The Baldwin County Reading Council (BCRC) recently held its awards meeting at The Gift Horse in Foley. Honorees recognized by the council were Jan Palmer, 2009 Outstanding Administrator in Reading, Ginger Miller, 2009 Reading Teacher of the Year, and Margaret Stephens, 2009 Community Service.
Jan Palmer is the Principal at Daphne Elementary School, Ginger Miller is the reading teacher at Daphne Elementary School, and Margaret Stephens is a retired nurse from Silverhill.
The council is the local affiliate of both the Alabama and International Reading Associations. The council supports its mission of the improvement of literacy and the promotion of life-long reading habits in the citizens of Baldwin County through community projects that support The Lighthouse, CARE House and the Alabama Sheriff’s Boys Ranch. The council promotes reading and writing in area schools by holding its annual “My Favorite Book” essay contest for first through sixth grades, and honors a local reading teacher, administrator and community service organization/person for supporting and promoting literacy projects in area schools and communities.
New Officers for the 2009-2011 term are: President Betty Mullek; President-elect Rose Mary Mitchell; Vice President Nancy Cosby; secretary Katrina Renfroe, Treasurer/Membership Evelyn Lowery; and Historian Beth Henson.
