Participants in the Baldwin County Spelling Bee might not have to spell them, but those words will certainly be on their minds when they compete Tuesday, Feb. 5 at the Loxley Civic Center,
School qualifiers from Baldwin County’s elementary, intermediate and middle public schools, plus qualifiers from Bayside Academy in Daphne, Bayshore Christian in Fairhope and Central Christian School in Robertsdale, hope to have success to gain victory and become champion of Tuesday’s Spelling Bee in order to advance to the state competition.
“We’re excited and ready to go,” said Linda Noble, elementary supervisor for Baldwin County Public Schools, who organizes the yearly event.
A total of 33 qualifiers will participate in this year’s event, Noble said.
They are, Kaeleigh Boykin, Bay Minette Elementary; Isbella Elego, Bay Minette Intermediate; Jonathan Barr, Bay Minette Middle; Alanna Wiest, Bayshore Christian; Joshua Foster, Bayside Academy; Jason Pounds, Central Baldwin Middle; Mikaela Boecher, Central Christian; Alexis Litteken, Daphne East Elementary; Alex Dudenhoeffer, Daphne Middle; Colvin Burroughs, Delta Elementary; Jordan Jensen, Elberta Middle; Jared Jones, Elsanor School; Walter Jones Swan, Fairhope Intermediate; Wanda Schlumpf, Fairhope Middle; Noe Hawkins, Foley Elementary; Bunni Lerille, Foley Intermediate; Mit Patel (runner-up Megan Bradford), Gulf Shores Elementary; Raylen Paschen, Gulf Shores Middle; Trevor York, J. Larry Newton; Mason Clark, Loxley Elementary; Tucker Cleverdon, Magnolia School; Alexis Gentry, Orange Beach Elementary; Zack Gibbs, Perdido School; Hunter Boltz, Pine Grove Elementary; Gavin Wallace, Robertsdale Elementary; Alexis Olsen, Rockwell Elementary; Lizzy Bankester, Rosinton School; Ashanti McCall, Silverhill School; Austin Shirk, Spanish Fort Elementary; Julia Coccaro, Spanish Fort Middle; Garrett Chancey, Stapleton Elementary; Bradley Billingsley, Summerdale School; and Walt Cassady, W.J. Carroll Intermediate.
Patrick Spafford of St. Dominique Catholic School in Mobile has already qualified for state competition as 22 spelling bee champions from Catholic schools in Mobile and Baldwin counties participated in district competition Jan. 10 in the Sarto Center at St. Pius X Catholic School in Mobile.
The state competition, which is sponsored by Adventure Travel, will be held March 9 at Oak Mountain High School in Shelby County near Birmingham.
Winners from state competition advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee which will be held May 26 through June 1 near Washington, D.C.
The nationally televised event is sponsored by the G.W. Scripps Company, based in Cincinnati. Its website, spellingbee.com, lists winners dating back to 1925.
While victory remains uncertain for the nearly 40 participants, one thing is sure. Baldwin County will have a new champion after Tuesday’s competition.
Four-time champion Andrew Wilson Williams, last year’s winner, is now a student at Robertsdale High School and will be retiring his crown this year. Williams, the son of Sherri Killam-Williams and Tom Williams of Loxley, finished fifth at state competition in 2012.
