Baldwin County Training School graduates gather at Black Education Museum

DAPHNE—Baldwin County Training School’s Class of 1955 celebrated its 55th anniversary Oct. 15-17 at the Black Education Museum.

This — its eighth class reunion — comprised a reception, memorial service for deceased members, dedication of a legacy gift to the museum and a church service at Christian Valley Baptist Church in Fairhope. The weekend’s theme was “Counting Blessings and Living Dreams.”

Twenty-six members of the class attended.   Several classmates, who could not attend, sent donations and moral support.

The reunion was highlighted by the unveiling of a black granite engraved bench erected on site at the museum, which stands on the same ground as the Baldwin County Training School. The bench was engraved with the class’ 1955 motto of “Sailing not Anchoring” and a figure of the school wolverine mascot.

The bench represents the class’ appreciation for the insight of their ancestors for education received at the school and the museum’s preservation of the heritage of education.

The class wanted to demonstrate that it is the responsibility of graduates to “give back” to the community as they move forward, a spokesperson said.

Brick pavers

The museum plans to integrate the donated bench with the its brick pavers project.

The goal is to construct a patio area that includes bricks purchased at the Black Education Museum.

The museum still seeks donations for bricks to build the patio.
