Baldwin cross country teams qualify for state

FAIRHOPE, Alabama — Three girls and three boys teams and 12 individuals qualified last week and will advance to compete in the 6A state cross country championship meet at Oakville Saturday morning.

Fairhope hosted the Site B, 6A Section 1 qualifiers Thursday at Founders Park. The top three boys and girls teams and the top six individuals not on those teams will make the trip to state.

McGill-Toolen Catholic won the girls meet going away with a perfect score of 15 as five Yellow Jackets crossed first through fifth. Robertsdale took second with 67 points and Foley third with 73. Carmen Carlos of McGill-Toolen won with a 19:10.51 followed by teammate Sage Blackwell of Montrose in second at 19:40.80. Robertsdale was led by Trista Phelps in sixth overall (22:09) and Foley's leader was Chelsea Gholson in 10th overall in 23:40.

For the boys teams, Fairhope led the way to first place with 28 points, McGill-Toolen was right behind with 33 and Foley made it a bronze sweep for Lions coach Tausha Knight in third with an 83.

The Pirates Shawn Hinton was the boys champion finishing the 3.1-mile course in 17:02.31 with teammate Jordan McKnight a close second in 17:06.49. Thomas Grace, fourth, Richard Zimmerman sixth and Tyler Pharez 15th filled out the Pirates scoring card. The Yellow Jackets were led by Conrad

Collins’ 17:26 for third overall and Foley by Zavion Strickland's 18:27 good for 11th overall.

Individual qualifiers in the girls division were Kaleigh Akers (10th overall), Kayla Olson and Jordan Peterson of Daphne, Bradley Midkiff and Elizabeth Zimmerman of Fairhope and Rachel Wickles of Satsuma.

Boys individual qualifiers were Cody Parker (16th overall) of Baldwin County High, John Alan Walker (9th overall), Alex Guillory, Jake Cady and Chris Cleveland of Daphne and Ross McDonald of Satsuma.

Spanish Fort girls qualify in Mobile meet

In 5A at Site A in Mobile, Spanish Fort's girls qualified with a second-place finish (52) behind St. Paul's (15) and ahead of Faith Academy's third place 72. St. Paul's also won the boys with a 21 score and the Toros took second with a 46. Eufala was a third with a 78. Individual winners were Dan Drew and Anna Braswell of St. Paul's.
