A Bay Minette bicyclist was killed after being struck from behind by a car along the Natchez Trace Parkway just southwest of Jackson, Miss.
Natchez Trace Parkway Chief Ranger Sarah Davis told The Clarion-Ledger George Wimberley, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene. Davis says Wimberley was riding his bicycle on the Parkway near milepost 54 around 5:45 p.m. April 9 when he was struck by a Nissan Versa driven by 52-year-old Norris Edney, of Clinton.
According to the Hinds County coroner, Wimberley died if multiple blunt force trauma. The road was closed for about four hours as an accident reconstruction specialist analyzed the scene.
“All I can say at this point is that they were both heading in the same direction, and the driver struck Mr. Wimberley,” Davis said. “I can’t give out any more information other than that until the investigation is complete.”
The National Park Service is leading the investigation, which is expected to take several weeks before a cause is determined, Davis said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is also assisting the investigation.
Since the parkway is a national park, the FBI has jurisdiction looking into possible felony charges. The results of the investigation will be turned over to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Jackson, which will determine if criminal charges will be filed.
This is the second time in less than a year that a cyclist has been killed on the Natchez Trace. In May 2012, a Kosciusko, Miss. doctor was killed outside of Kosciusko, about 60 miles northeast of Jackson. That investigation determined the teenage driver was texting at the time of the collision.
