Baldwin Drug Task Force boasts 20 arrests in 'Operation St. Michael'

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama --- Baldwin County Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack Jr. held a press conference Wednesday morning in Robertsdale to announce the arrest of more than 20 individuals in a county-wide drug operation dubbed “Operation St. Michael.”

“St. Michael is the patron saint of law enforcement,” Mack said, “and these arrests were conducted in the early morning hours, not only for the element of surprise, but also for the protection of our officers.”

Arrests were conducted by the Baldwin County Drug Task Force in three separate operations, Mack said, involving officers from the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, and police departments from Bay Minette, Loxley, Gulf Shores, Daphne and Orange Beach.

The Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office, U.S. Marshal’s Service Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, Drug Enforcement Administration Mobile Resident Office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office provided assistance with the investigations. Several divisions within the BCSO, Fairhope, Daphne and Loxley police departments also provided assistance with the operation.

Indictments included several arrests for unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, which included crack cocaine and methamphetamine, along with charges of manufacturing methamphetamine and conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

“People criticize small police departments for not doing enough to fight drugs in their communities,” said Bay Minette Police Chief Michael Rowland, “but without resources provided by county, state and Federal law enforcement, we would not have the tools necessary to make these arrests.”

Along with the arrests included the seizure of several firearms, including an SKS assault rifle, approximately one-half ounce of crack cocaine packaged in street level distribution amounts, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

“In this day of technology and social media, the idea of the ‘street dealer’ is a thing of the past,” Mack said. “It is our job as law enforcement to keep chipping away at the problem and I have no doubt that when you take a drug dealer off the street, you are taking several crimes with them. I can also guarantee you that these guns you see before you will not be used to harm any individual and these drugs will not be ingested by any young person. We have to see that as a win.”
