MONTGOMERY, Alabama – A page from the “Old School” playbook provided the spark as Daphne beat Foley 46-45 in overtime last week to grab the AHSAA Prep Spotlight for week three.
The Trojans, who trailed by as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter, scored with seconds remaining to tie the game at 39. Coach Glenn Vickery’s team got the tying score and sent the game into overtime using the old “hook-and-lateral” play.
Quarterback T.J. Fleeton, who was 15-of-26 for 198 yards and three touchdowns, fired a 10-yard pass to Tamaurice Tolbert, who then pitched to his brother Wheylan Tolbert who ran the final 27 yards of the 37-yard TD play. Chris Sain then caught the two-point conversion to tie the game at 39 and send it into overtime. Wheylan Tolbert caught a 15-yard pass from Fleeton in overtime and Tyler Cook kicked the game-winning extra point for the one-point win.
The unusual comeback overshadowed a super effort by Foley running back Cedrix Reed. Reed, who helped the Lions build a 22-point lead, ran for 270 yards and scored four touchdowns on runs of 7, 46, 8 and 61 yards to pace Foley.
The wild finish edged out another game where two running backs combined to rush for 599 yards and seven touchdowns. Berry beat previously unbeaten Hubbertville 42-33 as Terrance Hollingsworth had 25 rushes for 336 yards and scored four touchdowns. Hollingsworth, nicknamed “Tank,” scored on runs of 17, 25, 2 and 14 yards, added a two-point conversion and also had eight tackles on defense.
Aaron Dillard turned in a stellar performance for Hubbertville Lions with 233 yards rushing on 23 carries. He scored three touchdowns.
Others honored by the AHSAA: Spanish Fort's Joel Poe finished 11-of-14 passing for 238 yards and four touchdowns as the Toros beat Gulf Shores 56-7. Poe connected with Sam Harris on scores of 46, 28 and 5 yards. Bayside Academy's Joe Stassen gained 200 yards on 21 carries and scored a touchdown in a 35-14 win over Opp.
