DAPHNE, Alabama — St. Paul's Robert Shelton shot a 3-under-par 69 at TimberCreek to lead the Saints to a 308 team score and a 2-stroke win over Spanish Fort (310) in the Class 5A AHSAA Sub-State tournament Monday.

Baldwin golfers qualify for AHSAA state tournament

DAPHNE, Alabama — St. Paul's Robert Shelton shot a 3-under-par 69 at TimberCreek to lead the Saints to a 308 team score and a 2-stroke win over Spanish Fort (310) in the Class 5A AHSAA Sub-State tournament Monday.

Homewood edged out Briarwood by a stroke 315-316 for third. The top three teams advance to the state tourney.

Nick Williamson led the Toros with a 74 followed by Austin Depperschmidt (77). Jesse Redman (79) and Charles Wood (80). The top three individuals also qualify for state. Matt Lorenz of Gulf Shores shot a 75 in regulation which was a tie for third, but was knocked out in a sudden-death playoff.

In the girls Class 1A-5A combined Sub-State tournament at TimberCreek Monday, 3A Bayside Academy qualified with a third place finish behind two 5A schools. Rebecca Todd led the Lady Admirals with an 81, Haleigh Hughes shot an 83 and Bailey Mason a 94 for a 258. Hartselle was second by a three stroke advantage (255) and Winfield was the team champion with a 249. Brooke Sanson of St. James was the medalist with a 70. Former county champion and state individual qualifier Elaine Wood finished in fifth place with an 80 and so failed the make the state tournament match.

In Class 6A boys, McGill-Toolen Catholic sustained it’s streak of sub-300 scores (298) to win the South 3 Sub-state tournament at Heron Lakes in Mobile. 2012 defending state champion Alex Green of Fairhope shot a six-under-par 66 to earn the individual medalist honor.

Sheldon Statkewicz and Steven Setterstrom led the team champion Yellow Jackets to victory with a 1-over-par 73 each. Allam Cameron (75) and Dave Engerson (77) kept the total low enough to put Auburn (301) in second with Fairhope nine strokes back (310) for a qualifying score. The top three teams advance to the state tournament May 13-14 at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals.

Auburn’s Jared Bettcher's 69 was the second best round of the day with Tiger teammates Ashton Nix (75), Chance Taylor (78) abd Clayton Hubbard (79) in the scoring.

Fairhope players Colby Carr shot a 79, Trent Baggerly an 81, and Wes Cain an 84 with Pirate teammate Marshal Brown firing a 76 to qualify for the unattached individual state tournament competition.

Auburn's Addison Nix (76) and Prattville's Jake Finn (77) also made the individual state cut.

In Class 6A girls, Virginia Green of Fairhope and Alma Bryant's Aleesha Smith each shot 78 to co-medal in the AHSAA 6A South Substate tournament at Heron Lakes Monday. Auburn’s Lady Tigers claimed the team title with a 254 total to better Fairhope by six strokes.

Meagan Heath shot an 80 to lead Auburn teammates Rachel Barnes (86) and Sarah Battye (88). The Lady Hurricanes’ Smith qualified as an individual along with Best Phakamad of Northview and LeeAnn Cahoon of Prattville. Each shot an 82 to advance.

The Lady Pirates’ 260 was rounded out by Sidney White’s 89 and Jasmine Wallace’s 93.

Spain Park was third (270) with Caroline Gurley (83), Caroline Waldrop (86) and Logan McCabe (101) in the Jaguar scoring. The top three teams advance to the state tournament May 13-14 at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals.
