FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Baldwin Pops Band, conducted by Joe Riemer and Dr. Roger Jones will perform a family friendly concert titled “An Evening with the Pops” on April 24, at 6:30 p.m., at Henry George Park in Fairhope.
During this concert an outstanding high school band student from Baldwin County will be awarded the John Allen Scholarship. Each high school band director was requested to nominate their outstanding high school seniors to play with the Pops Band and to compete for this scholarship. This year the Baldwin Pops welcomed nine students representing five Baldwin County High Schools: Daphne High School, Fairhope High School, Gulf Shores High School, Robertsdale High School and Spanish Fort High School.
These students are Trey Fyock (trumpet) from Daphne High School; Whit Cadwell (alto sax) and Crystal Garrard (oboe) from Fairhope High School; Harrison Burr (euphonium) and Kevin Denton (bassoon) from Gulf Shores High School; Roben Campbell (trumpet), Gabrielle Kendrick (french horn) and Bryant Ramey (percussion) from Robertsdale High School; and Jacqie Rotch (percussion) from Spanish Fort High School.
The band will play “Fiddler on the Roof,” arranged by Warren Barker, “First Suite in Eb” by Gustav Holst, “Jupiter” by Gustav Holst, “On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss” by David R. Holsinger, “On the Eastern Shore” by Dr. Roger Jones and “The Thunderer” by John Philip Sousa.
Shawn Wright, a 2010 John Allen Scholarship winner, will perform Alfred Reed’s “Ode to Trumpet” with the band.
Bring a picnic supper and something to sit on while you enjoy the music and sunset. After intermission, there will be a children’s parade led by the Easter Bunny and the Checkered Tablecloth Award will be presented to a lucky picnicker.
The concert is free, although donations will be gladly accepted for the John Allen Scholarship Fund.
When he passed away at age 80, John Allen was the oldest member of the Baldwin Pops. At age 74 he decided to learn how to play the tuba.
Allen knew that most tuba players start learning their instrument in a middle school band so he called the Fairhope Middle School Band director at that time and asked if there was an opening in the sixth-grade beginner band. Allen then proceeded to become a student of the tuba and an inspiration to his fellow students.
He progressed with his band peers to the seventh-grade band then the eighth-grade band, where he remained until his death. He was very supportive of educating children on the value of music in their lives.
When the Baldwin Pops Band formed in 1997, Allen became a charter member. The scholarship fund was created in his memory.
This concert is sponsored by the city of Fairhope, the Baldwin County Commission and by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
