FOLEY, Ala. — Dr. Roger Jones and Joe Riemer will conduct The Baldwin Pops Band in a “A Concert in the Style of John Philip Sousa” on May 29, at 7 p.m., at Heritage Park in Foley. This is part of the Foley Convention and Visitors Bureau’s “Farmer’s Market, Music and a Movie in the Park” series.
After the concert, the movie “Charlotte’s Web” will be shown.
This concert is sponsored in part by the Foley CVB and a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
The concert will be performed a second time at Henry George Park in Fairhope, May 31, at 7 p.m.
The concert will feature classics such as “Light Cavalry Overture” by F. von Suppe and “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral” by Richard Wagner, alternating in typical Sousa concert style with marches such as “The Black Horse Troop” and “Manhattan Beach.”
Sousa always selected outstanding soloists to perform with his band. In that spirit, the featured soloists for this concert will include vocalist Rebecca Stevens singing “Habanera” from “Carmen” and “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” from “My Fair Lady.”
Saxophonist Jeff Lynn will also play “Radio Days,” arranged by Thomas Reed.
Stevens, a soprano, is a Daphne and Park City, Utah resident who has performed numerous times with the Baldwin Pops Band.
She has been privileged to sing twice at Carnegie Hall in New York City, recently singing John Rutter’s “Requiem” with the Eastern Shore Choral Society and earlier singing the “Faure Requiem.”
Stevens graduated from the University of Alabama with a minor in piano and received an MBA in finance from Drexel University.
Although she has always participated in church, school and community choruses, she did not begin formal vocal training until several years after graduating from college.
Since then, she has been a member of numerous choral groups such as Mobile’s Bella Voce women’s chorus, the Mobile Opera chorus and the Pensacola Opera Chorus.
Jeff Lynn is a resident of Elberta, and has been a member of the Baldwin Pops Band since 2001. He also plays in several jazz/big bands, including Carnival Band, The Lillian Connection Big Band, the Don Lewis Orchestra and the Jubilee Orchestra.
He has degrees in music education and computer science from the University of Southern Mississippi.
During college, Lynn played in the Jazz Lab Band, the Wind Ensemble and the Orchestra.
While living in the Dallas area, he was a member of the Texas Instruments Jazz Band that was invited to perform at the 2000 Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
After intermission the children will be invited to participate in the Children’s March. Also, a checkered tablecloth will be awarded to the group judged to have the most interesting picnic setup.
As always, Baldwin Pops Band concerts are free.
