“He was a really good friend,” said Kathy Bischoff of Foley in speaking of Harrison. She is a Pops member and remembers Harrison for giving her encouragement.
“He encouraged me to get my substitute (teacher) license so I could teach at the high school,” she said, something she has been doing for several years now and enjoying immensely.
“He was a good teacher and the kids loved him. He will be missed by the staff at Foley High School and the Baldwin Pops.”
According to Harrison’s obituary, he began taking piano at age 6. By high school, he was teaching piano.
He graduated from Banks High School in Birmingham in 1967 where he was an honor student, member of the marching band and captain of the percussion team.
He eventually graduated from what was then Troy State University with a B.S. and master’s in music education. He began his teaching career at Fort Rucker Junior High School and Ozark High School.
At Litchfield High School in Gadsden, Harrison’s band marched in the inaugural parade for President Richard M. Nixon.
At Foley High School, at the time of his death, Harrison taught music appreciation.
“Jimmy had a God given talent for music and was able to endow many of his students with a love of music and to obtain the maximum ability of each of his students,” Harrison’s obituary said.
“He wrote a special song for his sister and her husband’s 35(th) wedding anniversary and two special songs for his mother’s funeral service which touched everyone’s heart.”
Funeral services and burial for Harrison were held in Trussville, Ala., on Nov. 20.
