Baldwin prep football players of the week

FAIRHOPE, Alabama — A pair of Fairhope High School Pirate defenders lead this week's Gulf Coast Newspapers high school football top players.

Nick Cutrone and J.P. Sherling made defensive plays that helped the Pirates in a 63-13 win over Williamson on Friday. Cutrone had a 102-yard interception return for a touchdown, and Sherling returned a fumble 90 yards for a score.

• Fairhope’s Nick Cutrone returned an interception 102 yards for a touchdown and J.P. Sherling scooped up a fumble and returned it 90 yards for a score in a win over Williamson.

• Spanish Fort’s Joel Poe had 165 passing yards and two touchdowns, and Deon Johnson had a rushing touchdown and a punt return for a score in a win at Citronelle.

• Foley’s Maison Taylor had three touchdown passes in a homecoming win over Satsuma.

• Robertsdale’s Tevin Sykes returned an interception more than 40 yards for a touchdown that sealed the Bears’ win over Baldwin County on Friday. Bears’ quarterback Hunter Vaughn threw for 237 yards and rushed for a score.

• Bayside Academy’s Hunter Slater had three touchdown passes in a win over Excel.

• Gulf Shores senior quarterback Brandon Silvers had two rushing touchdowns to lead the Dolphins in a win over Faith Academy.

• Daphne running back T.J. Yeldon, a Mr. Football candidate, had 181 rushing yards and four touchdowns in a loss to McGill-Toolen.
