Baldwin Senior Citizens to compete in State Master Games

ROBERTSDALE, Ala-“You are only as old as you feel”, the saying goes, and for 56 Baldwin County senior citizens ranging in age from 55-90+, they will be feeling pretty young as they head out at 7 a.m. on Monday morning to Trussville, Alabama for the 20th annual State Master Games on October 11-14.

Sarah Duncan, director of the George P. Thames Senior Citizens Center in Robertsdale, said her group did really well in the District 7 Games held in May and qualified for the state level in such events as billiards, checkers, dominos, softball, basketball throw, horseshoes, shuffleboard, table tennis, bowling, swimming, golf and tennis.

Divided into nine different districts across different areas of the state, Baldwin, Mobile and Escambia represent District 7, according to Duncan, and are sponsored by the Area Agency on Aging in Mobile.

Beginning at 3 p.m. on Monday and held at the community center and different sporting venues around Trussville, the seniors will be competing in different events daily and have nightly entertainment including line dancing and “A Night with he Stars” banquet on Wednesday night, said Carolyn Vines, director of Senior Activities at Orange Beach Recreation Center.

The only expense will be lodging for the participants. Meals and charter bus transportation are paid for by community donations and the A.A.A. Vines said. In addition to donations, Duncan said they have had several fundraisers during the year including a “Red, White and Blue Social” in July and a Flea Market Day in September.
