ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — The Robertsdale High Band Boosters are planning a golf outing March 28.
That is music to Scott Gilbert’s ears. Gilbert, who is the Robertsdale Public Works Director and the parent of one of the students in the “Color Guard,” is organizing a “Golf Outing” at Glenlakes Golf Club in Foley March 28.
“This is something I can do,” said Gilbert. He said he chose Glenlakes because he’s participated in many tournaments there, and says that he’s had fun at all of them.
Gilbert added that while he’s been to many charity golf tournaments, this is the first he has organized. All the details are not in place yet, but with more than a month to go, it looks like there are at least 10 teams and around 32 sponsors for the tournament.
“And we haven’t even advertised yet,” beamed Gilbert.
Gilbert says he and his wife both graduated from RHS, but were not in the band. Their other children went to RHS, and did not participate in band
“My daughter, Nicole, is my band baby,” said Gilbert. He added that Nicole is also part of the Winter Guard.
“She and her friends give back to the school,” said Gilbert. “This is the least I can do.”
Key to winning door prizes is purchasing “Mulligans.” A “Mulligan” is golf slang for an unofficial “takeover” shot. Mulligans can be purchased. two for $10, and buying a set gives players tickets for the door prizes Gilbert is accumulating. prizes, one of which is a stay and rounds of golf at the Grand Bay resort.
The format for the tournament is a “four-person scramble,” which means the best ball hit by the team is the point from which the rest of the team plays. This goes on until a ball makes it into the hole. The idea is that if a team has a good golfer and a not-so-good golfer, play is speeded up and the good golfer is not penalized.
If you don’t have a foursome, don’t despair.
“We’ll group individual players into foursomes,” said Gilbert. The $100 entry fee covers greens fees, cart rental, range balls and a reception with food and beverages following the tournament.
A “Hole Sponsor” gets a sign on the golf course. A “Corporate Sponsor” gets a sign on the course, their company name on the leader board, and the opportunity to place their own banner.
A “Corporate Team Sponsor” gets a foursome, a sponsor sign on the course their name on the leader board, and a banner display that the sponsor provides.

Tim Wilson, RHS Band Boosters President says that the money raised by the tournament will be used to support the band.
“We do this for the kids,” said Wilson. “When you see how many kids get scholarships to go to college because of the band, you know it’s worthwhile.”
