DAPHNE — A Chickasaw man only had 30 minutes of freedom to spend the spoils of a Monday afternoon bank robbery.
After leaving the First Community Bank with an undisclosed amount of money, David Justin Wells, 25, stopped in Spanish Fort to get $10 worth gas. But that was all he had time to spend. About 30 minutes after the robbery, Wells was captured at a boat ramp on the causeway and transported back to Daphne by police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
According to police, Wells walked into the bank at 27397 US Highway 98 at 4:30 p.m. and handed the teller a note demanding money.
“Wells did not produce a weapon, but made a gesture, indicating he had a weapon,” said Daphne Police Lt. Judson Beady. “The teller gave him an unknown amount of money at this time and Wells fled the bank on foot.
“He was only in the bank a matter of minutes.”
The suspect left the bank, walked around back, entered a 1987 Nissan pickup and drove away. Beedy said the investigation showed Wells stopped at a gas station in Spanish Fort and paid for $10 worth of gas with some of the stolen money. He was taken into custody around 5 p.m., just 7 miles away from the bank.
“Wells was found on the Causeway at the boat ramp near exit 30 on I-10,” said Beedy. “Wells was arrested without out incident and all but $10 of the stolen money was recovered in his vehicle.”
Wells was transported to the Daphne Police Department and interviewed by detectives from the Daphne Police and the FBI. Wells confessed to the crime and was transported to the Baldwin County Jail on Tuesday.
