A Georgia man confessed to a Daphne bank robbery Monday when Escambia County, Fla., officers arrested him for outstanding warrants, Daphne Police Lt. Jud Beedy said.
Gerald Wayne Mathis, 32, of Cusseta, Ga., “was arrested yesterday by Escambia County, Fla., (Sheriff’s Office),” Beedy said Tuesday.
Mathis on Monday confessed to an FBI agent that he had robbed and taken an undisclosed amount of money from the First Gulf Bank in Daphne on Aug. 7.
“He walked in around 1:15 p.m. and demanded the teller to give him all of their money,” Beedy has said of the incident.
No customers were in the bank at the time of the robbery, according to Beedy.
“He didn’t use a weapon, but the teller assumed he had one. That was probably the best thing to do,” he has said.
The suspect — now identified as Mathis — had parked a truck in the parking lot on Professional Place, about 100 yards from the bank, between Main Street and U.S. Highway 98 according to Beedy.
“He is facing robbery charges in the third degree at a minimum since he didn’t show a weapon,” Beedy has said.
Third-degree robbery is a Class C felony and can result in one to 10 years in prison.
