Baptist Health Care has become the first provider in Northwest Florida to offer Barostim Baroreflex Activation Therapy, a newly FDA-approved treatment for patients with congestive heart failure who continue to experience symptoms despite medication.
The procedure, performed at Baptist Hospital by cardiothoracic surgeon Russell Ronson, M.D., involves implanting a device near the carotid artery that sends gentle electrical signals to baroreceptors, special sensors in the neck. These signals help the brain regulate heart, kidney and blood vessel function, enabling the heart to pump more efficiently.
“This is different from other devices as it does not go inside the heart or blood vessels,” Dr. Ronson said. “These sensors help the brain control how the heart, kidneys and blood vessels work, allowing the heart to pump more efficiently, which can help patients feel stronger.”
Congestive heart failure is a chronic, progressive condition where the heart cannot supply enough blood and oxygen to the body. Patients often suffer shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling in the legs and weakness that limits physical activity. When combined with medication, Barostim has demonstrated improvements in heart function, helping patients regain strength and return to daily activities.
Electrophysiologist Sumit Verma, M.D., described the procedure as an innovative option for select patients.
“Others who may benefit from this procedure are patients with pacemakers, those experiencing severe symptoms of coronary artery disease or individuals who are not candidates for a heart transplant,” he said. “This alternative treatment may be an option to help support their heart function.”
Baptist Heart & Vascular Institute continues to expand access to cutting-edge heart and vascular care throughout Northwest Florida and South Alabama.
