FOLEY, Ala. — Foodies and music lovers might want to head to downtown Foley this weekend as the sixth annual Barbecue and Blues Cook-Off is set for Saturday.
Presented by the South Baldwin Chamber Foundation, the event, which is part of the Alabama Barbecue Trail, will be held 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at Heritage Park. Admission is $10, with proceeds benefitting programs in Foley area schools--.
“Proceeds support the South Baldwin Chamber Foundation’s education enrichment and workforce development programs in our schools and community: student-and-teacher grants for South Baldwin schools, teacher training for initiatives like STEM at Foley Middle School and the AP Academy at Foley High School,” Foundation Chairperson Mary Riker said. “We also manage the Junior Ambassadors and Young Entrepreneurs Academy programs at Foley High School.”
Tickets can be purchased at the gate or in advance at the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce. Ticket holders will have an opportunity to win door prizes including a three-night, gulf-front stay compliments of Meyer Vacation Rentals; Sunday brunch for two at Coast Restaurant; a $50 Shrimp Basket gift card; a $50 Walmart gift card; and a $25 Tanger Outlet gift card.
According to Riker, the day will be packed.
“Festival goers will enjoy award-winning barbecue, popular blues bands, craft and retail vendors, children’s activities and silent auction bidding,” she said.
Of course, it all centers around the barbecue.
“Teams will offer food samples from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” Riker said. “The team earning the most people’s-choice donations, which go toward school programs, will be awarded ‘Baldwin’s Best Q.’”
While the Cook-Off is in its sixth year, Saturdeay’s event will include a couple of new features.
“The South Baldwin Chamber Foundation will be awarding student-and-teacher grants to schools at the gazebo stage at 10:30 a.m.,” Riker said. “Also employees from Riviera Utilities, our presenting sponsor, will be selling barbecue sandwiches from LA BBQ. So those will be available in addition to the BBQ tastings from cook teams.”
The event will feature plenty of teams showing off their culinary skills.
“We currently have 17 cook teams signed up to participate from Alabama and Florida,” Riker said.
But that’s not all. The day will be filled with additional activites, such as craft-and-retail vendor booths to peruse, pony rides, a petting zoo, a silent auction and door prizes. Plus, adults can visit the beer tent, and official festival T-shirts will be available to purchase.
That will be set to a backdrop of live music provided by Kelly Poole and the Swingset 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and the Blues Injectors 2-5 p.m.
With such offerings, it’s no wonder the 2013 edition drew such a crowd.
“More than 3,000 attended last year, and more than $30,000 was raised for the South Baldwin Chamber Foundation,” Riker said.
As for Saturday’s Cook-Off, she offers one piece of advice.
“To have a great time,” Riker said.
