BARC, Southern Chevrolet rescue 40 dogs

FOLEY, Alabama – The Baldwin County Humane Society, or BARC,

honored Southern Chevrolet Friday for sponsoring a campaign to

rescue and adopt 40 dogs from euthanasia around the county.

“Every last one came from a high-kill shelter. If we hadn’t

pulled them, they wouldn’t be around anymore,” BARC’s adoption

coordinator Deneen Balistere said.

According to dealership owner Mike Werneth, the company was

approach by BARC last year to sponsor the project.

“It just seemed like a worthwhile thing to do,” Werneth said.

“Everybody says that I and Southern Chevrolet are so great for

doing this, but it’s really the volunteers that do the work. You

can have all the money in the world, but it’s volunteers like these

people that get the work done. That’s where the rubber meets the

road.”

Even Al Davis, an staffer at Southern Chevrolet, adopted a

three-year-old lab mix named Malibu from the batch of 40

dogs.

“Malibu adopted me,” Davis said.

All of the dogs, many of which were named after Chevrolet

models, have been placed in new homes except for two lab mixes,

sisters Blondie and Brinn.

“They’re hopefully going out next week. We already have two

adoption applications in for them that we’re working on right now,”

Balistere said. “Blondie and Brinn were within minutes of being

euthanized.”

BARC also put a billboard over Highway 59 detailing the

dealership’s donation, so drivers can see it as they travel through

Foley.

“Southern Chevrolet asked us not to use any of the money

towards advertising, but the billboard was donated by Lamar

Advertising,” BARC Executive Director Sonja Presley said.
