Baseball Sun Chiefs salvage split at Meridian, snap five game losing streak

BAY MINETTE, Ala. Tanner Williams’ single down the left field line drove in what proved to be the winning run in a four-run fourth inning Saturday and Faulkner State snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-3 baseball win in the second game a double-header at Meridian, Miss., Community College.

Meridian won the first game 10-3. Faulkner also suffered through a 19-2 pounding at the hands of Pensacola Junior College in a Tuesday afternoon game last week ot PJC.The split at Meridian gave the Sun Chiefs a 2-7 record.

They hosted PJC in a Tuesday game on Stanley James Field, and will travel Friday to Monroeville to open Alabama Community College Conference South Division play against Alabama Southern

The Sun Chiefs will play a 1 p.m. nine-inning game Friday at Alabama Southern and a 12 noon double-header on Saturday. FSCC returns to James Field on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. nine-inning game against Okaloosa-Walton of Niceville, Fla.

Meridian 10-3, FSCC 3-5

Williams’ double was one of 11 FSCC hits in support of sophomore right-hander Joe Carter, who scattered nine hits in a complete-game win. Carter struck out three batters and walked two.

Meredian scored single runs in the second and third innings before Faulkner struck for six of its 11 hits in the go-ahead fourth.

Tim Daw started the rally with a lead-off double to left center field, Michael Tedesco followed with a single to center, and Cody Barber sent Daw home with a sacrifice fly to right field Chris Clements’ single to center tied the score, and Adam Heisler and Williams followed with RBI singles.

Daw reached on a one-out error in the fifth and later scored an insurance run on Taylor Roy’s fielders choice grounder.

Heisler, Zach Cates, Tedesco and Clements had two hits each for coach Wayne Larker’s Sun Chiefs. Tedesco also doubled. Heisler left the game in the sixth after suffering a pulled hamstring.

Matt Killing had three hits, Josh Steed two, Tyler Vick swatted a solo home run and Jarrod Parks doubled for Meredian.

Drew Snyder, Scot Mosley and Josh Demoney had a single double each,

Vick had two hits, and Craig Steed doubled in Meridian’s first-game romp. The hosts had 11 hits, staged three-run rallies in the first and sixth innings and posted two runs in the third and again in the fourth.

Heisler had three hits, Williams two and Zach Cates doubled for the Sun Chiefs. Starting pitcher Blake Summers lasted two innings in taking the loss.

PJC 19, FSCC 2 in 7

The Pirates scored three runs in the first inning, three in the second and then erupted for seven in the third on the way to ending the scheduled nine-inning game early va the 10-run-lead rule.

They tacked on four more runs in the fourth and answered Faulkner’s two-run sixth with three more tallies in the bottom half of the inning.

PJC collected 15 hits, 13 of them plus 17 runs batted in, two doubles, a triple and a home run coming from their top five batters in the lineup.

Lead-off man Comer Bear was 3-for-4, scored five runs and drove in one, David Poutier went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and five RBI, Robert Beary was 2-for-5 with three RBI and scored four runs, Ryan Ditthardt a triple in three at bats with three RBI and his replacement, Juan Vasquez, also getting an RBI, and Yariel Soto went 4-for-5 with a double and four RBI.

No. 9 batter Kyle Marks went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored three runs.

Roy had two of Faulkner’s five hits off five PJC pitchers.
