SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Two University of South Alabama students have been selected to hold the 2010-11 titles of Miss USS Alabama and Miss USS Drum.
Crewmates Audra Weldy, 21, of Semmes, and Jordan Spidle, 20, of Mobile received the accolades during a recent dinner, said Karen Conner, director of sales and marketing for USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park.
The 43-year-old Crewmate ambassador program, open each year to young women in Baldwin and Mobile counties, is also a scholarship program. Weldy, who is currently pursuing a career in photography, will receive a $2,000 scholarship, while Spidle, who is pursuing a degree in biomedical sciences, will receive $1,500. The pair were selected for their extensive knowledge of park history and trivia as well as other Alabama attractions and facts.
Fellow 2010-11 Crewmates Alice “Allie” Anderson, Megan Powe, Andrea Stadther and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Eiland will each receive $1,000 scholarships.
Crewmates not only represent Battleship Memorial Park during their one-year tenures but also act as representatives for the Baldwin and Mobile counties as well as the state of Alabama.
The 2011-12 Crewmate Contest will be held aboard the USS Alabama on April 7, where only six Crewmates will be named. Conner said contestants are judged on poise, appearance, application information, references and interviews with a selection panel.
Since its creation in 1967, the USS Alabama Crewmate program more than 200 young ladies from across the area have received scholarship assistance, logging thousands of community service hours across the state.
