SPANISH FORT, Ala.—The USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park will welcome its newest acquisition at 4:30 p.m. May 5 when the U.S. Sports Academy donates officially 13 Vietnam War sketches and a bronze sculpture crafted by nationally renowned artist Harry Weber.

The items have been on display in Daphne since Weber, himself donated them to the academy in the fall of 2010, after being named the 2011 Sports Artist of the Year by the American Sport Art Museum and Archives.

The ceremony will take place in the military history museum’s Aircraft Pavilion.

Weber’s “A Warrior’s Sketchbook” was compiled during his time with the U.S. Navy, including a one-year deployment as a riverboat patrolman to Vietnam. The sketchbook will sit alongside “Wounded Warrior,” another of Weber’s trademark bronze sculptures that honors what he calls “citizen soldiers.”
