The Rev. Herman Edward Baumann, 82, a native resident of Elberta, died on Sunday, June 14, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 31, 1926, graduated from Foley High School in 1945, enrolled in Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield, Ill., and graduated in 1952.

He was ordained at St. Mark’s in Elberta on June 14, and assigned to organize Our Savior Lutheran Congregation in Abilene, Texas. He served other pastorates at the dual parish of Zion Lutheran, Schulenburg, Texas, and Immanuel Lutheran, Halletsville, Texas (55-64), Zion Lutheran, Alva, Okla., (64-68), Emmanuel Lutheran, Hermitage, Tenn., (68-73), Eisleben Lutheran, Illmo, Mo., (73-78), and Redeemer Lutheran, Fairhope, (79-83).

He retired from active ministry and operated Fairhope Florist for nine years. He served as board member of Baldwin County Genealogical Society and Baldwin County Historical Museum and organized a Switzerland display annually in the Mobile International Festival.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Frieda Baumann, and brother, the Rev. Barney Baumann.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude E. Baumann of Elberta; three sons, Christian Baumann, Seth Baumann and Rudi Baumann, all of Elberta; daughter, Priscilla Baumann of Elberta; two grandchildren, Katie and Tabitha Baumann, both of Elberta; two sisters, Ruth Thies and Mary Ellen Dorn, both of Elberta; two brothers-in-law, the Rev. John Thies and John Dorn, both of Elberta; sister-in-law, Shirley Baumann of Elberta; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 16 at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Foley. Viewing begins at 1 p.m. with funeral services at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 17 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at St. Mark’s Lutheran Cemetery.
