BAY MINETTE, Ala. — The Bay Minette City Council will consider a sales-tax holiday to be set for Aug. 5-7 and will hear a report from Bay Minette Fire Chief Phil Bryars on responding to severe-weather events during the regularly-scheduled meeting.
At 6 p.m. Monday, council members will hear a first reading on a resolution to consider setting the sales-tax holiday for Aug. 5-7. As previously reported, the holiday would help offset back-to-school expenses by not charging tax on certain items purchased on those days.
Bay Minette City Clerk Rita Findley said in a telephone interview that Bay Minette residents will be interested in this item.
“That’s going to affect everyone in the city,” she said.
The council will also hear a presentation by Bay Minette Fire Chief Phil Bryars on responses to severe-weather events.
Findley pointed out that this will be another topic of interest to residents, as hurricane season began this month.
“He will probably update everyone on the burn ban and get them informed and updated of what to do during a severe-weather event,” she said.
In other business, council members will vote on a resolution to set HMR Engineering as the city’s ‘“tand-by” engineer, according to Findley.
“We don’t have an engineer on staff,” she said. “This is if something comes up as an emergency and we don’t have time for bids.”
Also Monday, the council will vote an a resolution to accept a property donation. The city council members will vote to accept the resolution for a $10 purchase of a 9.6-acre dirt pit on lot two, block one of Map Book 6, pages 157-160. The parcel is located in section 34, township one south, range three east.
City leaders will also consider acceptance of the Bay Minette Finance Committee’s accounts-payable report of $129,175.93.
Council members will also vote on training-expense requests for:
* Maggie Pinkard and Louise Johnson to attend the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center Users Conference in Gulf Shores Sept. 19-22 at a cost of $533.
