Bay Minette Fire Department acquires new medical trailer

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — The Bay Minette Fire Department has a new medical trailer to treat the sick or injured.

In mid-May, the Baldwin County Commission designated one of its two new 8.6 foot-by-6.6 foot-by 28 foot Featherlite structures for use in Bay Minette. The other was slated for Orange Beach.

According to a recent commission agenda form, the county obtained the trailers after the structures were brought to the area last year during the B.P. oil spill and were subsequently redistributed once that need ceased.

According to Bay Minette Fire Chief Phil Bryars, the $65,000 facility has multiple uses.

“On the inside it looks like a doctor’s office,” he said in an email. “We can use this at festivals and other events to treat sick or injured citizens. We could use this to set up mobile blood drives or give medications or immunizations in mass casualty incidents. If something were to happen at the hospital it could be used as a quick-treat facility.”

Bryars explained that the trailer made by Featherlite has yet an additional use, as well.

“It is equipped with an area for responders to rest and rehab(ilitate) for extended responses,” the fire chief said.

The new unit does not replace any of the fire department’s other equipment, nor does the department have plans for similar, future purchases at this time, Bryars said.
