BAY MINETTE, Ala. — The next phase of Bay Minette’s project to connect schools by sidewalks is set to begin next week.

During the Bay Minette City Council’s regular meeting Monday, Mayor Jamie Tillery announced that construction on the project is set to begin next week.
“We know that our contractor will be respectful of property, public or private,” she said in the meeting, “and that the contractor shall not cut, injure, destroy or remove any shrubs, plants or trees adjacent to the work, without first obtaining permission in writing from the proper authority.”
Tillery clarified that “proper authority” as either residents or the city.
The project will place 5-foot sidewalks along McMillan Avenue near bay Minette Elementary School.
“During construction, the Bay Minette Police Department will assist with traffic control,” Tillery said, “assuring safety on our city streets.”
She added that throughout the project that is funded through a grant from the Alabama Department of Transportation, contractors are expected to maintain the work area.
“No open ditches or trenches shall be left overnight,” Tiller said. “The contractor is to perform clean-up of the area in which he is working on a daily basis. Streets and roads will be free of dirt and debris while excess material is to be removed as soon as possible.”
The mayor also announced that construction is expected to be completed in early September.
Also Monday, the council approved the finance committee’s accounts payable report of $391,581.67.
