Bay Minette’s redistricting meeting draws few

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Monday’s

informational meeting on redistricting in Bay Minette only drew a

sparse number of attendees to city hall.

But among them was District 4

resident Ruth Sands, who said she wanted to see for herself the

proposed changes to city district lines.

“That’s your best information,”

she said at the meeting.

Bay Minette City Attorney Scott

Lewis explained that those changes will include a slight shift

northward for all five districts, with the most significant

alteration occurring in one particular district.

“There’s probably more changes to

District 5,” he said at the meeting.

That’s because to reach an ideal

population size of 1,644 residents, the district size needs to

increase by 21 percent. According to the map of the proposed new

district lines, the changes to achieve that include an annex at the

southwest portion of the city.

Lewis also pointed out Monday

that changes to district lines won’t mean as much in the outer

portion of Bay Minette.

“It’s the core of the city that’s

populated,” he said.

According to Bay Minette City

Clerk Rita “, those affected by the northward shift in the city’s

voting districts won’t have to reregister if they find themselves

living in a differing district.

“It just changes their voting

place,” she said Monday.

Bay Minette residents have one

more opportunity to ask questions on redistricting at the next

informational meeting, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov.

1, at the Bay Minette City Council Chambers. However, Findley said

she hoped to have a map of the new districts on the city’s website,

by press time.

“That’s one of my goals,” she

said, explaining that viewers will be able to zoom in on the map

and find their locations in relation to the new district

lines.

Once the informational meetings

are complete, the Bay Minette City Council will vote on the

proposed redistricting following a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. on

Monday, Nov. 7.
