DAPHNE, Ala. — Bay Rivers Art Guild held its 13th annual Juried Art Show Saturday, giving $2,300 in prize money to winning artists.
Thirteen paintings were recognized. Eight received cash awards with Monique McFarland, of Mobile, winning the top prize, Best in Show, with “Citrus I.” The painting included three citrus fruits resting in a crystal bowl before a greyish-blue backdrop. McFarland said her inspiration was wanting to draw a crystal bowl and wanting to experiment with lights and glass.
“(This painting) is the most rewarding,” she said. “Everybody loves it. I’m willing to sell it.” The painting was listed for $550.
Nancy Wininger’s “Copper and Cloves” was one of five Merit Award winners, earning her a $100 prize. The painting shows cloves of garlic resting on a copper cooking bowl. She said the inspiration was her love of cooking and garlic. The painting could be bought for $225.
Kathy Harris of Pensacola was recognized with one of five honorable mentions with her painting ‘Solitary Jam.” The painting is a portrait of her husband, Virgil, playing his acoustic guitar. It costs $550.
Art guild President Marilyn Ammons also had a winning entry, “Granny’s Bowl and Fruit,” which won an honorable mention.
“That was my grandmother’s wedding present,” she said while pointing to her painting of an apple, banana, grapes and an orange resting in or around a glass fruit bowl. She said it is her favorite painting, and it’s available for $750.
There were 146 entries in the competition, and Pensacola artist and competition judge Jeffrey Bass narrowed down the possible winners to 96 entries last week. He then completed the rest of judging, Ammons said.
