FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Bay Shore Ballet Theatre will present the much loved classic fairy tale ballet “The Sleeping Beauty” on April 24, at 2 and 7:30 p.m., and on April 25, at 3 p.m., at the Fairhope Civic Center.
Set to the exuberant score of Peter Tchaikovsky, this full-length production is designed to delight audiences of all ages.
The legendary ballet brings to life the timeless story of the beautiful Princess Aurora and her Prince Desire. The production showcases more than 60 of the dancers of The Bay Shore Ballet Theatre and students of the Academy from across Baldwin County.
Director Janet Carole, former professional principal dancer of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Montreal, the Oakland Ballet in California and soloist with the Pennsylvania Ballet, has restaged the ballet with much of the original choreography set in Russia by the legendary Marius Petipa.
The stage sets are elegantly done by the late William Loyed, professional scenic artist whose commissioned works have graced the stages of many professional companies seen throughout the South.
Lighting designer Will Dobson, formerly with Ballet South, designs the special lighting effects.
Principal dancer Emily Davis stars as Aurora, the fairy tale princess who falls asleep for 100 years to be awakened with a kiss.
Guest artist Matthew Johnson pairs with Davis in the principal role of Prince Desire.
Lauren Aldridge is featured in the leading role of the wicked fairy Carabosse, who casts her evil spell over the baby Aurora. She foretells that the Princess Aurora will prick her finger on a spindle on her 16th birthday and die.
The benevolent Lilac Fairy, portrayed by principal dancer Kristiana Bell, appears and softens the spell so that Aurora will not die but will fall asleep for 100 years to be awakened by the kiss of a prince.
Featured soloists in the wedding scene include principal dancer Tracy Peters as the famous Bluebird, Julianne Horak in the role of Little Red Riding Hood with Brian Yancey as the Wolf and Glorianne Morrow as the precocious white cat, also partnered also partnered by Brian Yancey in the comical role of Puss in Boots.
Also highlighted in the wedding scene are the delightful fairy tale characters of Cinderella, danced by company soloist Samantha Stewart and Snow White, danced by Bay Shore Ballet soloist Annie Pearson.
Featured as Fairies who are invited to the christening of the baby Aurora are soloist Emily Rushton, with Destiny Taylor, Brodie Foster and Paige Bertagnolli.
Leading character actress Linda Taylor portrays the nurse for the baby Aurora, and Brad Davis takes plays the role of the Master of Ceremonies in the grand court of this mythical fairy tale, with Shelby Graham and Rick Graham appearing as the King and Queen.
Bay Shore Ballet apprentice dancers appearing as attendants to the Lilac Fairy are Morgan Foster, Rachel Favret, Ashlyn Hamel, Margeaux Houston, Sarah-Nolan Jernigan, Susan Roh, Sarah Templeton and Annie Laurie O’Neill.
The royal guests of the court are played by Diane Davis, Joe Roh, Judy Morrow, Tom Morrow, Harvey Joanning and Thelma Topper.
Carole, who is also director of The Bay Shore Ballet Academy announces the Summer Intensive Workshops for intermediate and advanced dancers, with special guest teacher, former principal of Bay Shore Ballet Theatre, Katharine Gripp, who is currently performing works of Balanchine and Martha Graham with Vassar College in N.Y.
The workshops will be held at the Academy, 305 Fels Ave. in Fairhope, from June 7 through July 30, offering a flexible schedules and tuitions, from four to eight weeks, allowing for vacations.
The curriculum of classes will include pointe, pas de deux, character, pantomime, variations, technique, dance history and modern classes in the Graham technique taught by Ms. Gripp.
The Summer Dance Intensives are open to intermediate dancers, ages 9-12, and advanced dancers ages 12 and up.
The workshops will conclude with performances and receptions.
Open registration for dancers of all levels and ages is also being accepted for the fall session of classes which begin on Aug. 10.
Tickets for performances of “The Sleeping Beauty” are now on sale in Fairhope at The Coffee Loft, 503 N. Section St.; Page and Pallette, 32 S. Section St.; at The Bay Shore Ballet Academy, 305 Fels Ave., or before performances at the door at the Fairhope Civic Center, 161 N. Section St.
A special preview performance will be presented on April 24, at 2 p.m., with the special ticket price of $5 for all seats.
Two full-length performances will be presented on April 24 at 7:30 p.m. and April 25, at 3 p.m.
For both of these performances, ticket prices are $12 for adults; and $10 for seniors and children 12 and younger. Reserved seating is also available at $17.
The ladies of The Bay Shore Ballet Society will offer refreshments in the Ballet Sweet Shoppe and gift ideas in the Ballet Boutique in the lobby during the intermissions.
