In 1997, Vigor High School head baseball coach Joe Toomey came to the BayBears with an idea of his team playing in a round-robin tournament at Hank Aaron Stadium. In February 1998, the BayBears High School Baseball Classic was created. At the time, the tournament began with only four schools participating; Vigor, UMS-Wright, Baker and Citronelle. Since then the Classic has grown and expanded to its current format which now features 24 schools in Mobile and Baldwin County. This tournament gives student athletes the chance to play at a professional baseball stadium of which many of these players may never get the chance to play at the college or pro level. It also provides the opportunity for each baseball program to raise money for its respective schools by selling tickets to its game at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Seeding is based on final record through the first three days, least runs allowed and total runs scored in that order. Each school plays at least one game at the Hank. The champion is crowned after the final contest of the tournament between the top two seeds.
