DAPHNE, Ala. — Bayside Academy and visiting Hillcrest-Evergreen traded scores with the Admirals extending a 21-20 halftime lead to a 34-20 advantage into the fourth quarter. The Jaguars went without a score in the third quarter, but rallied late in the game with two scores—the last a 1-yard run by Malik Dees with 16 seconds left.

However the final extra-point attempt by Tyrese Lopez (Kicked from the 37 yard line after a Hillcrest-Evergreen personal foul on the touchdown play) was not good. Bayside then recovered the onside kick and held on for a 34-33 Class 3A Region 1 win.

Bayside senior quarterback Reid Norton had a rushing as well as a 22-yard passing touchdown to Henry Wise for the Admirals’ final score. Seth Shirley scored the first Bayside touchdown on a 1-yard run set up by a 41-yard pass from Norton to Nate Cook. Senior Admiral Connor Sirmon scored in the third quarter on a 19-yard run to cap a clock-eating 68-yard drive. Sirmon also threw a 31-yard pass off a play-action option to Shirley to set up another Admiral score. Pelham Henry and Wise each had a touchdown reception for Bayside. Mac Douglas hit 4-of-5 point-after kicks for the Admirals.

Hillcrest-Evergreen was led by Dees, sophomore quarterback Ryan Nettles, sophomore Brandon Reynolds and junior Kobe Bradley. Lopez was 2-of-3 on PAT kicks for the Jaguars and attempted a 2-point conversion pass that fell incomplete.

The Admirals came within two yards of a score in the third period when they drove 52 yards in nine plays before a loose ball on the next play was recovered by the Jaguars inside the Hillcrest-Evergreen 2-yard line on the final play of the period.

With the win, Bayside improves to 3-1 in Class 3A Region 1 and 4-2 overall. Hillcrest Evergreen fell to 2-2 and 2-4. The Admirals will travel to play Cottage Hill Christian (2-2, 3-3) next, The Jaguars will play at Mobile Christian 5-1 (4-0).
