DAPHNE, Ala. — Early last season, Bayside Academy quarterback Hunter Slater received his big break.
Then starting quarterback Camp Campbell went down with an injury and Slater was transported into the starting role. Now at the helm of the Admirals’ offensive attack, Slater’s poise and ability to read defenses has certainly garnished the trust of both teammates and coaches alike. Friday night’s Bayside victory proved Slater's abilities, connecting on three touchdown passes for the evening, en-route to a 53-10 win over 3A Region 1 foe Montgomery Academy.
Even though the scoreboard was not working properly, it was quite apparent from the initial kick-off to the last play of the game which team was dominating both halves. 3A No. 6 Bayside Academy (3-0, 2-0) defeated Montgomery Academy (2-1) in front of a packed crowd in Daphne. The Admirals didn't take long to ignite the fire, scoring their first touchdown at the 9:30 mark of the first quarter with a 40-yard bullet touchdown pass from Slater to Geoffrey Stinebaugh.
Stinebaugh scored twice on the evening and had one interception, which set up Joeseph Stassen for a touchdown run at the 1:48 mark of the second quarter. Stassen had a spectacular night, scoring five touchdowns in total, including a 65-yard run at the start of the third quarter.
Defensively, Zachary Dyas and Blaise Ledet led the team in tackles, with Dyas recording four unassisted and three assisted on the night, while Ledet had four unassisted and one assisted tackle during the game.
With four slipped discs in his back, Bayside’s Phil Lazenby coached in pain, watching as his team dismantled Montgomery Academy for their third straight victory of the season. Lazenby was pleased with his team, stating that his players certainly took care of business on the night.
“When a team blitzes, someone’s band is playing. Tonight it just so happened to be our band. We read the coverage well tonight and were able to avoid the Montgomery Academy defenders.”
Bayside Academy will be on the road on Friday, traveling to Clarke County for a 7 p.m. kick-off.
