DAPHNE, Ala.—After two months of deliberations, the Planning Commission unanimously approved a site plan for a performing arts center at Bayside Academy.

The 20.8-acre project had been held up after Jean-Marie McDonnell claimed that raw sewage from a treatment center on the Bayside campus had previously spilled onto the beach.

However, Daphne Utilities reported that no records of this were found during an investigation.

McDonnell also said that a creek near the beach that flows out to Mobile Bay had recently been identified as a historical landmark; she contended that construction in the area could impact the historical nature of the site.

A 2005 study of the area found American Indian arrowheads and blown-glass bottles in the creek.

Commissioners last month asked that both matters be looked into before the plan came back for a vote.

Though deflated, McDonnell acknowledged her respect for the project and its architect.

“Overall, I think it’s a great project and I have the deepest respect for Mr. Knodel,” she said, referring to Bruce Knodel, project architect.

Bayside headmaster Tom Johnson also addressed the commission during public participation.

“A factor to consider is our fine-arts department,” he said. “This area is known for people  that are dedicated to fine arts. I have more fine-arts teachers than football coaches.

“We need a theater.”
