DAPHNE, Ala.—Bayside Academy will hold its debut performance inside the Pilot Center this weekend when the senior class performs “Arsenic and Old Lace” on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
Tim Kirby, the drama department director, will direct the play.
“The main roles are the two old ladies,” he said, continuing that the story is about two older ladies who own a boarding house in Brooklyn, N.Y., and they go insane and begin using arsenic in wine to poison the boarders. The play was turned into a Frank Capra film in 1944 and starred Cary Grant.
Emily Gunn will lay Abbey Brewster and Haley Adams will play Martha Brewster as the two old ladies. Kirby said the cast has been practicing the play for around eight weeks.
This will be the first performance inside the theater, which seats 401 people according to Taylor Strunk, Bayside’s communications director. Kirby said the theater cost around $6.5 million to build.
“It’s been under construction the past two years,” Strunk said. “In addition to the auditorium, we have a art gallery, a bay room, a stage craft room where students can build sets and a classroom.”
Ticket cost is $12 general admission, $10 for senior citizens and $8 for students. The money raised will go toward funding for the drama department, Kirby said.
The rest of the cast is as follows: Rev. Dr. Harper played by Spencer York; Teddy Brewster played by Rodney Campbell; Officer Brophy played by Harrison Adams; Officer Klein played by Karim Tarabein; Elaine Harper played by Emily Grant; Mortimer Brewster played by James Marshall; Mr. Gibbs played by Austin Watts; Jonathan Brewster played by Sawyer Earwood; Dr. Einstein played by Emil Kasmia; Officer O’Hara played by Thomas Ellison; Lieutenant Rooney played by Matt Cazalas; and Mr. Witherspoon played by Andrew Trice.
