DAPHNE, Ala. — One hundred total points and nearly 1,000 yards of total offense added to the big-game, homecoming, battle-of-the-undefeated feel at Bayside Academy Sept. 24 as Bayside overwhelmed No 10-ranked Mobile Christian 60-40. But even record-setting point totals and win streaks are just icing on the cake compared to the main mission for all coaches and players: Win out to the playoffs.
“It’s a big win for us,” said Admirals coach Phil Lazenby. “If you like offense, this was a heck of a game for you to watch. Unfortunately, it’s the type of game that drives me crazy. Our guys up front were blocking and we were running. We were playing well. We pride ourselves on that, on running it. We have to do that to have success.”
Bayside's defense gave up more points than they had all year, but to a top-10 team. The Admiral defenders also rallied on key drives stopping two two-point-conversion attempts and forced two interceptions and recovered a fumble on a kickoff. Still, Lazenby wants to see more proactive improvement on defense and in kicking. The kickoff team allowed a TD run back.
"We didn't play well defensively or in the kicking game," Lazenby said. "But offensively everything we did worked."
Scooter Blake and Jonathan Walton had three touchdowns each, Ryan Owens had two and Camp Campbell had one rushing and one passing for BA. Jacob Graddick and Graham Ives each intercepted MCS quarterback Jonathan Redd.
Thomas Buchanan carried six times for 56 yards including a key first down.
Geoffrey Stinebaugh had seven catches for 116 yards. Stinebaugh also combined one of those completions from Campbell with a hook-and-lateral to Blake sweeping out of the backfield for a 34-yard TD. Owens had 198 yards on 28 carries and Walton added 171 yards on 14 carries. Owens scored on runs of 27 yards and from the MCS 1 and Walton had TD runs of five, seven and 41 yards. Blake's scores included runs of 37 and 7 yards, and the TD off the 34-yard scoring pass-and-lateral. Stinebaugh and Trey Smith shared extra point kicking duties.
Campbell, a senior, was 9-for-11 for 159 yards and was happy to be part of a record-setting night.
"Well, it's always fun to put a lot of points up and it's nice for it to be a record, but we just want the win first," he said. "That's what we work for. Keep winning. Keep it going. And we did that tonight. We got it done against a good team. We knew we might have some trouble stopping them with their strong offense, so we knew we had to put more (points) up and we did. I'm just proud of our boys. Our offensive line did a great job all night, opened big holes up front for us. But our defense did well too. Made big stops when they had to. Two interceptions. That was big."
BA came from behind the Leopard's opening score to lead 7-6 on a drive that went 90 yards in under three minutes. The Admirals led at halftime 26-19.
The teams’ combined offenses totaled 950 yards. Bayside finished with 634 yards, including 475 on the ground, while the Leopards gained 316 total yards.
Redd tossed TD passes of 40 yards to Peyton Wasden, 42 yards to Ryan Stevens and 20 yards to Trey Chambers, and also ran a yard for a TD. Tyler Rogers also had a 65-yard kickoff return for a touchdown for the Leopards, and Will Mesbergen added a one-yard scoring plunge.
Region play resumes this weekend as Bayside visits Washington County Friday at 7 p.m.
