Bayside advances past Wicksburg

DAPHNE – The Bayside Admirals advanced to the second round of the 3A state baseball playoffs Friday.

The Admirals' home sweep of the Wicksburg Panthers ended with 6-2 and 13-2 victories for freshman starter Joe Vincent and senior starter Cameron Reehl. Both went the distance.

"We really concentrated more on ourselves this past week," said Bayside coach Doug Leffard. "I know that might be a coach's cliche' but we really focused on the things we needed to work on. We're really proud of our players and our coaches for getting the job done."

Leffard said the success of the team, now 21-6, was a total team effort combining pitching, defense and hitting. The one-two, rookie-veteran punch on the mound has been a big part of it all, he said.

"We have a lot of confidence in both of them. Joe Vincent did a great job and Cameron did as well. They both struggled some at times, but they have done a great job all season of working through those kinds of situations and that's why we're in this position now."

At the plate, Bayside got off to early starts both times. Will Sanders led off the bottom of the second with a single and later scored the first of 19 total-series runs on a double by Tyler Masterson. Masterson ended both games with four hits and five RBIs, including a two-run double in game two to score Sanders and Joby Allen.

"We moved the ball today," Leffard said. "Wicksburg had three lefties and we haven't seen that many this year. But we concentrated and adjusted well. And they have worked hard all year to be able to do that."

In game one, John Stassen and Max Dearing drove in Allen and Masterson to cap a three-run second. BA added one in the third off Masterson's Sac fly to score Sanders again. In the fourth, Reehl singled, stole second and scored on a Dearing double. Allen then singled in Sanders.

In game two, Dearing, Reehl, Sanders, Allen, Stassen, Corey Dean and Justin Raines scored for a 7-0 second-inning lead for Reehl. Dearing and Paul Moravec added two in the third and a four-run fourth put it away for the Admirals. Kendall Potts and Colby Adkinson scored for the Panthers.

Bayside travels to Slocomb Friday for the second round series. Slocomb defeated Cottage Hill in three games in round one.
