DAPHNE, Alabama — Hunter Slater doubled to left in the fourth inning, stole third and stole home to give Bayside Academy and starter Jacob Graddick the only run needed to edge Clarke County 1-0 Thursday in a big 3A Area 1 series opener in Daphne.

The Admirals improved to 10-3 as Graddick went the distance on an economical 81 pitches, scattering seven hits, striking out four and relying on his defense to keep the Bulldogs off the plate. Geoffrey Brooks also singled for Bayside.

"I'm proud of the team for hanging tough to get a big win for us," said Admirals coach Doug Leffard. "The defense did a great job today, made some big plays. Jacob threw for strikes, made them put the ball in play and trusted his defense. But we need to start swinging the bats better."

The Admirals travel to CCHS Friday for games two and three of the series which start at 4 p.m.
