Bayside baseball gets area wins

DAPHNE, Ala. — The Bayside Academy baseball Admirals posted a pair of big area wins Thursday and Friday. One at home and one on the road.

Bayside swept the Washington County Bulldogs winning 10-4 in Daphne Thursday and 5-2 Friday in Chatom.

The Admirals improved to 12-4 overall and 2-2 in their five-team 3A Area 1 alignment. The wins were even bigger after an earlier set back against area rival Clarke County last week.

“Our kids battled,” said Bayside coach Doug Leffard. “That is something they've been doing, but we’ve been coming up a little short here the last few games. Our kids believed and worked hard and it's to their credit. We kind of hit into some bad luck in some of the middle innings but I am very, very proud of our guys for battling the way they did. Washington County has a great team and coach (Reid) Utsey always does a great job.”

At WCHS Friday, Bayside's Neal Christman led off the game with a solo homer and was followed by a two-run shot by Chase Langham to set the tone. Joe Vincent (2-1) got the win having pitched a two-hit, five-strikeout set.

On Thursday, the Admirals did it the hard way and climbed out of a four-run hole with an explosive 10-run, two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth inning. Utsey was impressed.

“That is the difference between a good team and one that doesn't know how to protect a lead,” he said. “Bayside is down and they get the bases loaded, get a couple of hit batters and stand in there and drive a couple of hits to the gap and they get a rally started with two outs. That is what winning teams do.”

Washington County threatened in the top of the seventh with two on and no outs, but BA right hander Jacob Graddick retired the next three in order to get the win in relief.

Offensively, half of the Admirals 12 hits came in the sixth inning. Five, including two triples came with two outs. Langham’s three RBI triple in the sixth gave the Admirals the lead 5-4. Geoffrey Stinebaugh and Hunter Slater both singled twice in the rally and each scored a run and had an RBI in the big inning.

Geoffrey Brooks had an RBI double while Christman and Joe Stassen each had one RBI for the Admirals. Greg Parker was 3-for-4 with a triple and one RBI, Vincent went 2-for-2 with a double and one RBI. WCHS went up 1-0 in the top of the first and added three more by the fifth. Butch Abston was 2-for-4, Andrew Rivers had a sac-fly and Hunter Warr an RBI.

Graddick came in for Slater in the fifth and struck out five with two hits in three innings of relief for the win. Slater had scattered five hits with four strikeouts and three walks in four innings.

Dane Howard (1-2) gave up seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 5-2/3-innings to take the loss.

The come-back started for BA when Stinebaugh and Slater reached on back-to-back, one-out singles and Brooks reached on an error to load the bases. Stassen and Vincent then worked back-to-back hit-by-pitches for RBIs to get the first two runs in. Langham's two-out, three-run triple to right center field then put them in front for good. Christman then reached and forced an error on a bunt that scored Langham to make it 6-4. Parker, Stinebaugh, Slater and Brooks drove in the next four.

BA's varsity will travel to J.U. Blacksher Tuesday, to Citronelle April 4 and return home for an area-series game with T.R. Miller April 7. The JV Admirals will host Cottage Hill March 31 and Fairhope April 2.
