DAPHNE—The Bayside Academy Admirals almost pulled off one of the biggest upsets in school history Friday night. With first and goal at the T.R. Miller five and just 40 seconds left in the game, Bayside trailed 28-24. But the No. 2-ranked Tigers' defense came up with a stiff response to the Admirals' ground game and pushed Bayside back to the 10.

On fourth and goal with just four seconds to go, Camp Campbell tossed a Hail Mary fade to Daniel Beebe at the goal line, but the ball slipped through and was intercepted as time expired.

"Our kids played their hearts out," said Bayside coach Phil Lazenby. "They played great, Miller just came out with more points than we did. It's a tough one to lose."

Miller took the lead in the first quarter on the second play of their opening series with a Wil Riggs to Terez Lane bomb for a 75-yard score. But Bayside answered with a 10-play, five-first-down drive capped by a Dave McKeithen scoring dive from the one with 5:05 on the clock. Garrett Hilton kicked the first of his three extra points and it was 7-7. The series was set up by a 15-yard return by Ryan Owens to the Admirals' 30. and crossed mid field on a Campbell to Scooter Blake cross good for 37 yards.

Bayside held the Tigers and got the ball back on their own 15 before going 85 yards on eight plays. A reverse to Blake and a screen pass to Owens picked up first downs before Campbell found Beebe down field at the Tiger 20. The senior wide out then raced it in for the go-ahead touchdown with just five seconds left in the period.

But Lane returned the kickoff 89 yards as the quarter ended and Miller took a 14-14 tie into the second.

On their fourth drive, Bayside started at their own 35 and made it to the nine of Miller. Owens took an off-tackle slant in, but the TD was called back on a holding penalty, Bayside later settled for a 38-yard field goal by Hilton to make it 17-14, Bayside.

Anthony Herbert's 11-yard run would put the Tigers up at the half 21-17.

Bayside later marched 89 yards on their second possession of the half. The drive was set up by a pumped-up defensive stand by the Admirals at their own 10 when Blake and Thomas Buchanan brought Herbert down on a fourth and short attempt. Blake picked up one first down on a 12-yard run. Campbell hit Buchanan and Owens for key first down completions and picked up 18 himself on a pair of keepers. Then, on a second and 10 plunge at the Tiger twenty, Chris Ives shot through the Miller middle for the next, but last Bayside TD to make it 24-21.

Herbert scored the only points of the fourth quarter on a 31-yard break away.

The final Admirals drive started at the Tiger 10 when Jeb Jennings picked Riggs off with five minutes left. Bayside was faced with a fourth and four and Buchanan lined up to punt, but faked and rushed for the first and then some to the 41. Fifteen plays and five more first downs later, the upset dream came up short.

Bayside , 1-1 in region play will host Straughn next week in another key region game.
