DAPHNE, Ala. — Bayside Academy’s bid for the playoffs slipped away Friday night as 2A Region 1 opponent Southern Choctaw got the win region victory 12-7.
“They have some good athletes and they shut us down,” said first-year Bayside coach Phil Lazenby. “We had a our chances. We just didn’t capitalize on them. We have no one to blame but ourselves. We’ll regroup and get ready for this next one and hope to go out with a 5-5 season. It’s not what we wanted. Not what I want, not what they want but I said as long as we’re at Bayside, we’re going to work.”
SCHS scored first on a touchdown pass from quarterback Jameson Stensill to Lorenzo Scruggs to take the lead 6-0 as the extra-point try failed.
Bayside answered later in the second quarter when Admiral Quarterback Michael Sirmon found a break away Dusty DeNeef for a 40-plus yard reception down to the seven yard line from where senior tailback Brandon Pilot used his blocking well to reach the endzone.
Pilot’s point-after touchdown kick was good to give Bayside the lead 7-6 at the half.
The third quarter was scoreless, but SCHS got on the board again in the fourth with about 7:21 left in regulation.
Stensill scrambling and under pressure through the ball up for grabs into the endzone and Indian receiver Irvan Turner came down with it for the score.
The PAT try for two was no good as the Admiral defense closed the running lanes for SCHS.
Interim head coach Charles Chaney said his players had gotten back to focusing on football again after some midseason controversy had rocked the boat at SCHS.
They have gotten back on track and are starting to come together as a team again,” he said.
The Indians wrap up their 4-5 year overall so far with a 3-3 region record and also hope to end it on a win against 1A non region Aliceville.
Bayside also finished with a 3-4 region record and will host Frisco City next week as the Admirals try to close with a win as the Whippets wrap up their regular season as well.
