DAPHNE, Alabama - The Bayside Academy Lady Admirals took the runner-up trophy in the Alabama State Indoor Track and Field Championships at Birmingham’s CrossPlex Feb. 2.
Lumped together with larger 4A programs, the 3A Lady Admirals took second behind perennial powerhouse UMS-Wright by the score of 108-72 with 4A Beauregard third at 67 in the 1A-4A Class grouping.
A number of second-place, third-place as well as top five and top ten individual and relay-team finishes helped keep the Lady Admiral athletes on the heels of their Mobile-affiliated rivals across the bay and ahead of Beauregard.
A second-place finish in the 4X200 relay by Lady Admirals (1) Alona Melendez, (2) Molly Pinnix, (3) Carlisle Calametti and (4) Bowen Spottswood and a bronze performance in the 4X800 by (1) Pinnix, (2) Isbel Leatherbury, (3) Spottswood and (4) Catie Caldwell were all big point boosters for B.A.
Individually, Melendez was second in the 300-meter hurdles, Trista Barry took second and Leatherbury third in the high jump.
Melendez claimed fourth and Barry fifth in the long jump while Melendez and Leatherbury followed with third and eighth spots in the triple jump to add to the point total. Emory Builta scored third overall in the shot put.
In the 60-meter sprint, Carlisle Calametti was sixth, Jane Anne Cicco seventh. Mary Catherine Branyon was fourth in the 3200 and seventh in the 1600-meter distances, Spottswood took eighth in the 800-meters and ninth in the 1600.
On the boys team for Bayside, Ryan Shankle ran to a third–place finish in the 1600 (4:38.19) behind winner Robert Hope of UMS-Wright (4:33.43) and Will Faulk of St. Bernard (4:36.48). Shankle also helped the Admirals to sixth in the 4x800 relay with teammates (1) Shankle, (2) Weston Robles, (3) Ash Midyett and (4) Ryan Phipps passing the baton. The young Bayside boys team was 13th in a 22-team field.
The first major local track and field meet for many Baldwin teams will be the St. Paul's Relays which is set for Saturday, March 2.
