Bayside girls win cross country title

DAPHNE, Alabama - Bayside Academy's Lady Admirals won the AHSAA 3A State Cross-Country meet Saturday at Jesse Owens Park near Oakville with a 66-71 point victory over T.R. Miller.

With two seventh graders in the top 10 (Mary Catherine Branyon led the Bayside girls with a third-place overall finish and Abigail Warner captured 10th) along with senior Molly Pinnix 12th, and junior Carlisle Calametti 18th B.A. claimed the 3A championship.

In 6A, Junior Hannah Evans of Fairhope ran an 18:55.92 for seventh and Daphne sophomore Kaleigh Akers a top-20 19th in 19:42. Both were personal best for the two who finished as the 2012 Baldwin County champ and runner-up last month. Both girls attained the U.S. Second Team Elite status.

Cody Parker (17.13) of Baldwin County High was 45th to edge out county champion Thomas Grace of Fairhope who finished 46th overall in 6A boys competition with a time of 17:14. Alex Guillory and John Alan Walker of Daphne both had near PR finishes of 17:21 and 17:29 finishing 52 and 59 in statewide field of 202. Grace is also a U.S. Second Team Elite while Guillory and Walker are Elite in rankings.

In 5A girls Linsey Hrabovsky of Spanish Fort was 13th in 20:34.68 and teammate Jordan Huber took 16th in 20:37.37.

Toro seniors Connor Irion and Tyler Orem battled each other down the stretch to finish 54th and 55th for a 0.03 second difference of 18:14.65 to 18:14.68

Across the Bay, the girls of Old Shell Road stole the show as seniors Carmen Carlos of McGill-Toolen Catholic, Kathryn Lazarchick of UMS-Wright and Alana Babington of Saint Paul’s Episcopal all finished their high-school careers with individual state titles.
