MOBILE, Alabama — The Admirals remained unsinkable Friday with an impressive 38-13 win over a solid Mobile Christian team on the Leopards' home field.
Bayside Academy improved to 5-0, 3-0 while MCS fell to 2-3, 2-1 on the outcome of the non-region contest. All of the Leopards' losses have been to Top-10 teams. The Ads now face another undefeated team in 3A Region 1 rival Washington County. "That's what's it's all about," said BA head coach Phil Lazenby. "Two good undefeated teams ready to go at each other. It's a biggie. It should be a good one."
The WCHS Bulldogs, ranked No.4 and the Admirals No. 6 as of Friday will meet this Friday in Daphne at 7 p.m., in a battle of the states best 3A unbeatens. At MCS, the Ads stopped the home team on the Leopards' first possession and then went 55 yards in 10 plays to score on a 2-yard dive by Jonathan Walton. Trey Smith kicked the first of his five extra points five minutes, 30 seconds into the game. Bayside went on to keep MCS out of the endzone, by containing the break-out running of Tyler Rogers, until the last play of the third quarter. But Lazenby — although pleased with the win — was not pleased with everything.
"Our defense played well, especially the starters. Very aggressive. Not as pleased with the second group. They could do better. Secondary played well overall, had a couple of big I-N-Ts. On offense, threw the ball well, had some good runs. Not as consistent as I would like and missed a couple of field goals — that didn't help. But Mobile Christian is big up front and our line had a lot on them, but they did a pretty good job of creating some room and that's good to see. We were able to keep our basic game plan in effect. You know, some of it worked, some didn't. Mobile Christian had a little something to do with that."
Jacob Graddick capped a 25-second drive on the Ads next series with a 10-yard touchdown run to make a 14-0 game going into the second period. A Graham Ives interception at the BA four and 17-yard return thwarted the Leopards first deep drive and led to Smith kicking a 32-yard field goal. BA led 17-0 with 8:23 left in the half. BA punted on their next series, but that 52-yard punt by Greg Parker pinned the Leopards deep. The Ads got the ball back with 3:40 remaining and drove 56-yards to score at the 1:36 mark on a 10-yard run by Walton to lead 24-0 at the break.Bayside deferred the toss and received to start the second half. Parker returned the ball 27 yards to the MCS 44. A 44-yard TD toss from Hunter Slater on first down was called back for holding, but BA scored five snaps later on a 3-yard plunge by Joe Stassen and the Ads led 31-0. MCS got on the board with 28 seconds left in the third when Jacob Sutter threw a TD pass from the BA 9 to Matthew Waltman. The try for two was no good. Tripp Puckett then returned the kickoff 49 yards to the MCS 26 and Slater scored three plays later on a forward quarterback keeper behind his offensive line. MCS came within 21 yards of the BA goal on a later drive, but Zack Dyas picked off Sutter's pass at the goal line and returned the ball to the Leopard 40 for a 60-yard return.
With many relievers in, Bayside's defense held off the Leopard starters for over five minutes allowing a TD pass on a Hail Mary 4th-and-goal heave from Sutter to Carson Presley. Quinn Pullen added the PAT kick to make it 38-13.
Stassen rushed for 89 yards on 14 carries, Walton picked up 79 yards on nine tries, Slater threw for 126 yards going 9-for-13 passing.
