DAPHNE, Ala.—Nearly 400 educators from Alabama and Jackson, Miss., gathered on the Bayside Academy campus for the Alabama Association of Independent Schools Conference.
Highlights of the two-day event included a presentation by Pat Bassett, president of the National Association of Independent Schools. Bassett encouraged his audience of independent school teachers and administrators to think about the skills needed by 21st century students, asking the question, “What values will the 21st century demand and reward?” Citing examples including self-discipline, leadership, ethical minds, creativity and innovation, he encouraged attendees to implement teaching strategies to nurture character, communication and real-world problem-solving.
Following an opening assembly and dinner on the bluff of Mobile Bay, the conference resumed the second day with three sessions of seminars, for which the teachers earned continuing education credit and opportunities for networking.
