Bayside Lady Admirals sail into Dirty Dozen semis

MOBILE – The Bayside Lady Admirals sailed through some choppy waters over the weekend but made it through to the semifinals of the McGill-Toolen Catholic Dirty Dozen home tournament before falling to the eventual tourney winner and perennial Louisiana state contender Mt. Carmel of New Orleans.

From a pool that sent three of its four teams to the semi-finals, including Mt. Carmel's Cubs, Bayside fell 25-11, 25-23 in elimination. The Lady Admirals rebounded from game one to take an 8-0 lead off an opening serving run by junior libero Victoria Smith. But the Cajun Cubs rallied to retake the lead and the match.

"We're bad about getting a lead then giving it back," said Lady Admirals coach Ann Schilling. "But against them (Mt. Caramel) we fought back. We are battling some fatigue right now – tournament fatigue. But we're OK. We just have to fight through it, still need to be more consistent though and finish."

Smith finished the tournament with eight aces and 77 digs for BA. Setter Sydney Chandler also had a good weekend at the line with nine aces and had 105 assists. Gabby Deshotel had 48 kills and 34 blocks; Virginia Pittman had 43 kills, 18 blocks and 31 digs; Maggie Niemeyer had 20 kills and 58 digs; Jhalen Caffey had 14 kills and 56 digs.

Bayside went 3-2 to exit the tournament 24-7.

The Cajun Cubs went on to defeat the host Dirty Dozen in a close one 26-24, 26-24 for the title.
