DAPHNE, Alabama — Class 3A No. 1 Bayside took another step toward another historical season Thursday night when they defeated the visiting 6A No. 4 Hoover Buccaneers in three straight sets 25-18, 25-21, 25-21.

With the win the Admirals now have won every match since their only loss at the beginning of the season on the road against McGill Toolen.

In game one it was close early before the Admirals scored three straight points to give them a big enough cushion to win the game and gain the early 1-0 lead.

Games two and three would go very much the same way as the admirals would make great plays early and walk away with fairly easily victories.

“Overall I thought we played pretty well,” Admirals head coach Ann Schilling said. “Most of the time tonight our service looked good; defensively I thought we let too many balls drop and I was a little upset about that.”

Senior Virginia Pittman led the way for the Admirals in both kills with 16 and blocks with four. Senior Middle Back Gabby Deshotel also contributed with 10 kills of her own and led the team in aces with three. Junior outside hitter Jhalen Caffey led the team with 8 digs and junior setter Sydney Chandler added 26 assists.

“Both of my middles, Virginia and Gabby did a good job in the middle,” Schilling said. “I felt like that’s where we could exploit them because I feel l like our middles are a lot more experienced than theirs. Overall everyone did a great job.”

Thanks in large part to winning the last 10 straight state titles the fans of the Admirals pack the gym making the matches at Bayside very exciting and tough for visiting teams.

“The kids are really getting into it. They really enjoy coming to the games,” Schilling said. “We haven’t had too many home games until late in the season so it helps a lot.”

The Admirals have two events left in the regular season to get ready for another title run beginning with the area tournaments that start on Oct. 18.

“We need to get better defensively. Like I said that was my disappointment today,” Schilling said. “Our front line defense has to get better too. We got used to many times of the block but we’ll get there”

The Admirals will be in action again on Saturday when they play Benjamin Russell in the Battle of Old Shell Road in Mobile. They close out the regular season on Oct. 9 when the play at home against St Pauls.
