DAPHNE – Riding a historic starting wave, including three straight region wins, the 4-0 Bayside Admirals host 2A powerhouse Mobile Christian in a non-region match up featuring two undefeated top-10 teams.
Bayside coach Phil Lazenby hopes to gauge his team's status as the Admirals enter the home-stretch of the region run next week. But tonight the focus is on the Leopards who came from behind last week to top Flomaton's Hurricanes 21-20.
"This is the best Mobile Christian team I have seen," Lazenby said. "They are well coached and have great receivers and a great quarterback (Jonathan Redd). I hope we can somewhat contain their offense. Nobody has as of yet."
The Admirals are ranked No. 7 in 3A while the Leopards are at No. 10 in 2A.
Toros visit Tigers in Bay Minette
BAY MINETTE – Spanish Fort hits U.S. Hwy. 31 north to Bay Minette tonight for the first-ever meeting of the Toros and the Baldwin County High Tigers.
SFHS coach Bryant Vincent was impressed by BCHS's 27 points against Fairhope last week. It was the best offensive outing of the Tigers' 2010 season in spite of giving up 49 points to the Pirates.
"It should be a great match up. Baldwin County has a lot of team speed and athleticism," Vincent said. "They have just turned the ball over at crucial times in the game. They looked like a different team against Fairhope, but turnovers really hurt them again. The record doesn't display what type of team they have. Their schedule the first four games – is as hard as anybody's in the state. They have played McGill, Daphne, Theodore, and Fairhope. Their combined record is 12-4."
Although at 0-4 so far, Tiger coach David Wofford said he saw a resurgence of his team's will to win against Fairhope last week.
“The kids came out and decided they weren’t going to hand a game to somebody," he said. "I saw a resurgence of our football team playing hard with intensity. They played to the final seconds and if we keep doing that then good things will happen to us this year."
The No. 8 5A Toros take a 3-1, 1-1 record to the county seat with two wins over 6A schools under their belt already.
Pirates travel to face St. Paul’s
MOBILE – The Pirates (3-1, 3-0 in 6A Region 2) visit 5A St. Paul’s Friday. The 3-1, 2-1 Saints are coming off a region loss to LeFlore.
But St. Paul's defeated the only team to beat Fairhope this year in Spanish Fort. The Toros held the Pirates to just six points.
Since then the Pirates have blossomed offensively with potent passing by quarterback Chase Domino and explosive running from Tanner Martin out of the shotgun spread.
Trojans host tough Bobcat team
DAPHNE – Daphne seeks to remain undefeated but must overcome a tough 3-1, 2-1 Region 1 Theodore Bobcat team that — records aside — is always up for the Region 2 Trojans. The two often meet in the 6A playoffs with Daphne winning last year at THS and the Bobcats ending the Trojans' 2008 season at DHS.
Theodore dropped a close one to region rival Murphy 21-19 last week while the Trojans shut out Williamson and are balancing sufficient scoring with the second-best 6A defense (six points per game in region play) in the state.
Dolphins add game against Saraland
GULF SHORES – Still looking for their first win of the season, the Gulf Shores Dolphins will get another shot during a game this Friday that was not originally on the schedule.
After losing a close one 24-16 to Vigor on Friday, the Dolphins were planning to take a week off to rest and heal before hitting the road to play Citronelle on Oct. 1.
At the last minute, however, the Dolphins were able to secure a game with Saraland High School to fill the open date.
“It was last minute,” said Gulf Shores principal Dr. Ernie Rosado. “We didn’t get it nailed down until last Thursday and I am not sure if Coach (Mark) Freeman contacted them or if they contacted us, but it was a good opportunity that we thought would be good for us.”
Although the Dolphins will take the field with an 0-4 start on the season, they could be considered a slight favorite over the Class 4A Spartans. Saraland is 1-3 on the season, with losses to Mobile Christian (27-0), Jackson High School (63-15) and Thomasville (56-0). Although they gave up 27 points against Monroe County High School, the Spartans were able to pull off the win, 31-27.
Tonight’s game will be played at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium located at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
Foley travels to play Hurricanes
IRVINGTON – The 3-1 Foley Lions visit the 1-3 Alma Bryant Hurricanes tonight for a Region 1 vs. 2 showdown.
Foley defeated McGill-Toolen 35-7 on Friday, while Alma Bryant defeated Baker for its first win of the season.
Foley has outscored opponents by an average score of 29-11 this season, while the Hurricanes are giving up 40 points per game.
Bears host Baker for homecoming
ROBERTSDALE – The Robertsdale Bears look to get back on the winning track when they host the Baker Hornets for homecoming tonight at J.D. Sellars Stadium.
Robertsdale (2-2) lost 6A Region 2 opponent Satsuma last week, but picked up their first region win over Williamson the week before.
Baker (0-4) has been outscored by an average score of 26-7 this season.
