DAPHNE — No. 6-ranked Bayside Academy improved to 6-0 for the first time in program history and had to beat back a determined, undefeated and No. 4-ranked Washington County team to accomplish it with a 35-28, 3A Region 1 home win at Freedom Field. The Admirals had only had three drives in the first half, but scored on two back-to-back (67 yards and 69 yards) to take a 14-7 lead at the half.

The Bulldogs tied it 14-14 in the third period, but WC  lost momentum when Greg Parker took a deep kickoff at the four all the way for a 96-yard touchdown return to retake the lead for BA. Both teams scored twice more as the Ads preserved the 7-point margin for the historic win. Bayside head coach Phil Lazenby was pleased with the effort and execution of his offensive line and running backs, including quarterback Hunter Slater, all of whom gave great second effort, he said.

"They got it done tonight. We had some good  blocking on our bellies, got outside a couple of times and when Jonathan (Walton) goes down, we have to depend on our smaller backs, but though they may lack for size, they don't lack for heart. As small as they are they play big and fought for every inch, protected the ball and got what they wanted. What  we all wanted it and I'm really proud of the whole bunch. In the second half there were a lot of big plays by our offense and some hard running. The offense really took charge in the second half.”

Walton left the game after scoring two second quarter TDs with a sore ankle and 54 first-half yards on 9 carries. Though he did not score,  Joe Stassen helped to set up four scores with 98 yards rushing on 17 carries. Slater scored from 7-yards out and Tripp Puckett from nine to cap a pair of fourth-quarter series which ate up the clock and preserved the win. Trey Smith hit the PATs for the Admirals. WC threatened in the second half with better throwing, but the BA defense never let the Bulldogs break away for a easy TD.  which rushed for 226 yards. Desmond Abston scored two touchdowns foe WCHS. Washington County QB Dane Howard hit Brandon Johnson for a  12-yard touchdown pass and Tyrone Kidd scored on a five yard reverse. Logan Gunn kicked the PATs.

The Admirals (6-0, 4-0 3A Region 1) now travel to No. 8 Trinity Friday at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs (5-1, 3-1) are set to host T.R. Miller.
