Bayside's Beebe takes golf state title

MOBILE, Ala. — It’s a place most high-school golfers never get to stand, but Caroline Beebe had stepped onto the 1A-5A state medalist platform as a champion once before. Before she could drive — a car, that is.

The Bayside Academy junior won the individual championship in 2008 as an eighth grader playing for Spanish Fort High and had little trouble driving — off the tee.

She stepped back onto the 1A-5A division platform Tuesday as a co-champion with Hartselle’s Heather Nail at Magnolia Grove's Crossings Course.

“It feels great,” she said, about her second state title. “I worked really hard this year.”

Beebe took third last year and sat out '09 as a transfer, but played a lot of junior golf tournaments around the Southeast.

Her second individual crown resulted from back-to-back, 4-over-par 76’s for a two-day total of 8-over to tie Nail at 152 for the 1A-5A girls title.

Beebe was in second after the first 18 holes Monday. And like 2008, she had to rally on the final day.

“I wasn’t as far back this time as I was then, my eighth grade year. So I think it was easier this time. I like this course. It’s more wide open. But I struggled with my putting the first day and had a bad drive on one hole. I’ve had some trouble with my driver this year.”

Beebe said she adjusted for the second round by spending some extra time on the practice green and being more conservative off the tee.

“(In between rounds) I practiced my putting and focused on keeping my head down more. And with my drives, I just focused on hitting it down the middle.”

The Lady Admirals young team which finished fourth overall.

Qualifying as an individual, sophomore Elaine Wood of Spanish Fort High finished tied for eighth with a pair of 81s.

Haileigh Hughes of Bayside was 19th overall, Danielle diPretoro 23rd and Rebecca Todd 24th.
